Peter Doocy Unconvinced As Psaki Asserts a 2008 ‘Drive Through’ El Paso, TX By Biden Counts as a Border Visit

Fox News’ Peter Doocy grilled White House press secretary Jen Psaki about a statement that President Joe Biden made last night during the CNN Town Hall.

Biden insisted, “I’ve been there before and I haven’t — I mean, I know it well. I guess I should go down. But the whole point of it is I haven’t had a whole hell of a lot of time to get down.”

Doocy asked Psaki, “Following up on something else the president said last night, why did President Biden say he has been to the border?”

“As you may have seen, there’s been reporting that he did drive through the border when he was on the campaign trail in 2008 and he is certainly familiar with the fact — and it stuck with him — with that fact that in El Paso, the border goes right through the center of town,” Psaki responded.

The border, in fact, does not go right through El Paso, Texas, it actually separates El Paso from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua Mexico.

“What the most important thing everyone should know and understand is that the president has worked on these issues throughout his entire career and is well versed on every aspect of our immigration system,” Psaki explained.

After discussing Biden’s visits to Central America, Psaki concluded by taking a shot a former President Donald Trump and said, “He does not need a visit to the border to know what a mess was left by the last administration.”

Doocy reacted with shock, “Does that count as a visit? He said, ‘I’ve been there before’ — you’re saying he drove by for a few minutes — does that count?”

Psaki then tried to change the subject by focusing on the “root cause” of the illegal immigration and touted Biden’s visits to Central America.

Doocy then asked about the last part of Biden’s statement, “He said, ‘I guess I should go down.’ So does he think that he needs a photo op?”

Psaki replied by again trying to shift to the Trump administration, blaming it for the current influx of illegal immigration and said that the visits by the former president only led to bad policy decisions in her view.

The Washington Post recently reported on Biden’s 2008 visit:

On Oct. 17, he held a rally in Mesilla, N.M. The press officer on the trip, David E. Wade, told The Fact Checker that the plane landed at the El Paso airport and then the motorcade took the nearly one-hour drive to the suburb of Las Cruces. The drive took Biden along a route that for a few minutes hugs the border of the United States and Mexico. “For most of us, it was unfamiliar territory,” Wade said, who recalled that some reporters joked about crossing the border during the event.
