Democrat Tameika Isaac Devine lost handily to Republican Daniel Rickenmann in the Columbia, South Carolina Mayoral runoff race on Tuesday evening. Joe Biden won that city in a major way back in 2020, but unfortunately for Democrats, Devine was unable to piggyback off of that success.
The city lost a 30 year Democrat streak for the mayor’s seat, despite Devine getting major endorsements, similar to what happened recently in the statewide Virginia elections. Dem U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and former Democrat President Barack Hussein Obama both stumped for Devine, but it just was not enough, and Rickenmann won the night.
This is a devastating blow to South Carolina Democrats, Barack Obama, and Democrats all over the United States. It shows that the red wave in New Jersey and Virginia was likely not an anomaly and even though California is staying deep blue, other parts of the nation are threatening a huge 2022 and 2024 red wave.
People are sick of “woke” politics, schools, Covid-19 mandates, and open borders in our view, and are voting in such a way to express those feelings.
Democrats are doubling down anyway though, censuring U.S. House Rep Paul Gosar (R-AZ) over an “offensive” anime video posted to Twitter recently. The Dems aren’t getting the message yet in our view. From Fox News in part:
Columbia has been so reliably blue over the last several years that Republicans didn’t put forth a challenger to Rickenmann’s Democratic predecessor, Mayor Stephen Benjamin.
Republicans are likening Rickenmann’s victory to the GOP’s successful push in Virginia weeks ago that elected businessman Glenn Youngkin as the commonwealth’s next governor despite Virginians voting reliably blue for several cycles.
Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, celebrated Rickenmann’s victory as part of a “red wave.”
Columbia, SC has been led by Dem mayors for 30 years. @JoeBiden won this city by 30 points in 2020 and @BarackObama campaigned for the Democrat.

But last night, Republican @Rickenmann had a big win. The red wave is coming! https://t.co/F2r11Ky34v
Maga Conservatives reported in part:
The backlash against the Dems mismanagement is not over. Voters just flipped a mayor’s seat for the first time in 30 years. Barack Obama went down to campaign for the Dem candidate and Joe Biden won the area by over 30 points.
And the GOP still won. Daniel Rickenmann will be the 37th mayor of Columbia, South Carolina. The city has had a Dem mayor for 30 years. Think about that when someone tells you the red wave is a mirage.
“I’m just overwhelmed by all the support from the business community, the citizens of Columbia, the young people and the old, a cross-section of people,” Rickenmann said. “I’m just excited about the opportunity to serve them and get to work.”
Many think Democrat voters are just not showing up to vote. But Republicans hope they are actually winning some of them over.
