Fox News’ Peter Doocy today pressed White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre after Joe Biden announced a plan to cancel $10,000 in federal student loans.
In a clip shared by digital strategist Greg Price, Doocy told Jean-Pierre that she was “talking a lot about how much it might cost, how much it not cost.”
“Who is paying for this?” Doocy pressed.
Jean-Pierre insisted in response, “What we are saying is, the work that this administration has done, that Democrats in Congress has done, is actually there and you see that the $1.7 trillion deficit deduction that you see, is going to benefit us in being able to do something for the middle class.”
“This is about doing something for people less than $125,000, $1.7 trillion, that’s what we have been able to do,” Jean-Pierre insisted.
Doocy pointed out, “But when you forgive debt, you’re not just disappearing debt, so who is paying for it?”
“We lifted the pause, we are going to lift the pause at the end of this year, which is going to matter. Which is going to offset a lot of what we are doing as well,” Jean-Pierre replied.
Jean-Pierre then claimed, “We are doing this in a smart way, we are doing this in a way that is going to be effective, we are doing this in a way that keeps the president’s promise when giving people who need some breathing room.”
Unconvinced, Doocy asked again, “Who is going to pay for this, who?”
“No Peter, I just laid out for you how we’re seeing this process and why this matters,” Jean-Pierre asserted while reiterating her previous claims.
