At Least Seven More Looters Arrested in One of the Hardest Hit Counties in Florida

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis got some criticism for his warnings to potential looters in areas that were hardest hit.

It appears that even with the stark warnings, there have still been some who have tried to take advantage of the situation.

One local station reported on Saturday that five people, who were local to the area, were detained and arrested for looting in Lee County.

The group reportedly attempted to steal high-end sneakers and other items from outlets in the area using black garbage bags.

Carlos Reyes Carmenates, 33, Mirna Abstengo Quesada, 33, Roberto Didier Enamorado Reyes,30, Gelsi Thalia Tamayo Varona, 14, Daymase Varona Reyes, 35 and Alain Banzo Dieguez, 19, were booked in the Lee County Jail and charged with burglary.

According to another report, two men from Homestead, Florida, which is south of Miami, were arrested yesterday for looting in Fort Meyers Beach.

The duo claimed they were going to assist in cleanup efforts on the beach, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, but instead were seen stealing items from a local business and then loading the items into a trailer.

West district deputies searched the trailer, which was located with both men inside, and recovered and returned all of the victim’s property to him.

Ernesto Martinez, 34, and Noel Morales, 54, are both being charged with grand theft over $750 less than $5,000, with an enhancement for it occurring during a state of emergency.

As we reported last week, four others have also been arrested and charged with looting in the aftermath and three of those were found to be illegal aliens.
