Actor Alec Baldwin was indicted on Friday by a grand jury on an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with the fatal 2021 “Rust” shooting.
It was one year ago that New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb announced that Baldwin would be charged with manslaughter.
A gun enhancement charge was dropped in February and the manslaughter charge was dropped in April after Baldwin had originally pleaded not guilty.
At that point, Baldwin faced up to 18 months in prison, and according to the New York Times, he again faces that much time as the maximum possible sentence.
In response to the charges, Baldwin’s lawyers, Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas of Quinn Emanuel, said, “We look forward to our day in court.”
While Baldwin had previously been able to avoid a conviction, “Rust” assistant director David Halls, was not so fortunate.
In March, Halls pleaded no contest to one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon which led to a suspended six-month sentence of unsupervised probation.
As part of the plea deal reached with prosecutors, Halls also agreed to pay a $500 fine, participate in a firearms safety class, refrain from taking drugs or alcohol, and complete 24 hours of community service.
Halls was the person who handed Baldwin the loaded firearm that led to the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
