U.S. House Rep Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) was one of the first House Democrats to criticize “The Squad” member U.S. House Rep Ilhan Omar (D-MN) “outrageous and clearly false statements” she made comparing the United States and Israel to the Taliban and Hamas while discussing war crimes.
A dozen Jewish Democrats have also issued a statement as well pushing back against Omar and asking her to “clarify” her comments.
U.S. House Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and fellow “Squad” member took to Twitter today to defend Omar and suggest that the situation should be handled internally to prevent her from being put in “danger.”
“Pretty sick & tired of the constant vilification, intentional mischaracterization, and public targeting of @IlhanMN coming from our caucus,” Ocasio-Cortez lamented.
Ocasio-Cortez then claimed, “They have no concept for the danger they put her in by skipping private conversations & leaping to fueling targeted news cycles around her.”

AOC and Omar’s fellow progressive, BLM activist Rep. Cori Bush also came to Omar’s defense in a tweet that was retweeted by Ocasio-Cortez, urging the “attacks” to stop.
Bush demanded, “Stop attacking @IlhanMN. Stop attacking us. I’m not surprised when Republicans attack Black women for standing up for human rights. But when it’s Democrats, it’s especially hurtful. We’re your colleagues. Talk to us directly. Enough with the anti-Blackness and Islamophobia.”

Omar responded to the statement by her fellow Democrats in a two-part tweet, referring to it as shameful and likewise mentioning islamophobia.
“It’s shameful for colleagues who call me when they need my support to now put out a statement asking for ‘clarification’ and not just call. The islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive. The constant harassment & silencing from the signers of this letter is unbearable,” Omar said.
“Citing an open case against Israel, US, Hamas & Taliban in the ICC isn’t comparison or from ‘deeply seated prejudice,'” Omar continued
“You might try to undermine these investigations or deny justice to their victims but history has thought us that the truth can’t be hidden or silenced forever,” Omar added.
