Although Democratic governor candidate Nikki Fried recently expressed confidence her party would select her as the nominee despite being outperformed in terms of endorsements and fundraising by Charlie Crist, her recent comments would suggest otherwise.
Apparently looking to make a splash, Fried decided to inexplicably compare Florida GOP Gov Ron DeSantis to Adolf Hitler.
Fried has made controversial statements and released provocative pictures in the past, but this one certainly tops them all.
The only statewide elected Democrat and Agriculture Commissioner Fried said the governor compares to Hitler “in a lot of ways” during an interview with The Florida Roundup. “I have studied Hitler and how he got to power.”
Fried asked, “Do I think that we’re going to get to the extent of Hitler’s power?”
“Of course not. But the rise of his power and what he did to scapegoat certain people, and especially the Jewish community in Germany, and how he utilized going after the media, blaming people, and putting fear and then taking over the military. That’s what this governor is doing,” Fried claimed.
DeSantis triggered the left in early December when he proposed creating a state military force to give him “the flexibility and ability needed to respond to events in our state in the most effective way possible.”
Florida, however, had a state guard decades ago and twenty-two other states have their own state guards.
Leon County GOP Chair Evan Powers described Fried’s comments as “outrageous” and stated that “If you look at real, authoritative leaders in our history, they take rights away from people and try to force mandates from the government on those people.”
Powers added that conversely, “What the governor has done to great success is give those freedoms back to the people and get the government out of the way.”
DeSantis’ Press Secretary Christina Pushaw also weighed in on Fried’s claims and declared that “With this hysterical comparison, Fried not only smears millions of Floridians as Nazis, but also trivializes Hitler’s crimes against humanity.”
“This is not funny, it’s sick,” Pushaw added.
