Disney’s ‘Woke’ Lightyear Disappoints in Opening Weekend, Barely Outpacing Top Gun 2 Which Has Been in Theaters For a Month

Disney’s “woke” movie “Lightyear” disappointed in its opening weekend, barely outpacing Top Gun 2, which has been in theaters for a month.

A same-sex kiss in “Lightyear” between a character, Alisha, and her partner has made international headlines.

Not only that, but some are upset that Tim Allen is not the voice of Buzz Lightyear, as Fox News’ Janice Dean explained, “I tried looking up why filmmakers didn’t use him and the quote from @AngusMacLane was: ‘Tim’s version of Buzz is a little goofier and is a little dumber.’ And so I will never watch this movie.”

Jenna Ellis reported the news, “CNBC: Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ snares a disappointing $51 million in domestic opening.”

“Go woke, go broke,” Ellis added along with a woman shrugging emoji.

As Variety reported, “Lightyear” earned a lackluster $51 million domestically and $34.6 million internationally from 43 markets, taking its global total to $85.6 million.

The movie was banned in smaller foreign markets, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, because of the same-sex kiss, Variety noted.

“Jurassic World Dominion,” which is in its second weekend, took the top spot domestically with $58.6 million, while “Top Gun: Maverick” came in third with $44 million.

“Top Gun: Maverick” only dropped a scant 15% from last weekend and only one other film that debuted in wide release has generated more in its fourth box office weekend — “Avatar,” with $50 million.

Variety also pointed out that “Lightyear” cost $200 million to produce and tens of millions more to market, which means that it could have trouble turning a profit.
