A defense attorney, for former Hillary Clinton lawyer Michael Sussmann claimed that his “case is an injustice” during opening arguments yesterday.
The claim by the attorney is likely an appeal to the Washington D.C. jury, where residents voted for Clinton over Donald Trump 90.9 percent to 4.1 percent in 2016.
In his opening statement, Michael Bosworth argued that Sussmann had no reason to lie about who his clients were when he met with the FBI’s top lawyer in 2016.
Bosworth portrayed Sussmann as a veteran federal prosecutor and cybersecurity lawyer whose reputation as a partner at the major law firm Perkins Coie depended on the relationships he had established at the FBI and other agencies in the national security establishment as he insisted, “Michael Sussmann didn’t lie to the FBI.”
“Michael Sussmann wouldn’t lie to the FBI,” Bosworth declared.
Bosworth explained, “His whole livelihood depended on his credibility with these agencies and he’d never throw that away.”
“As jurors, you have the extraordinary responsibility … to prevent injustice. This case is an injustice,” Bosworth told the jury.
Jonathan Turley highlighted the possible left-wing bias of the jury today in a column for The Hill.
Turley pointed out how tough Trump associates on trial had it with Washington D.C. juries and even the judges compared to what Sussmann is facing.
“To paraphrase Charles Dickens in ‘A Tale of Two Cities,’ for a prosecutor D.C. can be the best of venues or it can be the worst of venues,” Turley lamented.
