Elizabeth Warren Blames ‘Greedy Corporations’ For Thanksgiving Groceries Costing More This Year

U.S. Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) attempted to deflect blame off of President Joe Biden in a tweet yesterday where she blamed “Greedy corporations” for Thanksgiving groceries costing more this year.

Waren took a cue from Business Insider who titled an article that she shared, “America’s biggest companies can’t stop bragging to investors about how they’re charging you more.”

In her tweet, Warren asked, “Wondering why your Thanksgiving groceries cost more this year?”

“It’s because greedy corporations are charging Americans extra just to keep their stock prices high. This is outrageous,” Warren declared.

On Monday, Warren asked the Department of Justice to open an investigation into so-called anti-competitive practices by the poultry industry as turkey prices soared.

As we explained in an article yesterday:

PBS reported today that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average wholesale price of an 8- to 16-pound frozen turkey in mid-November was $1.35 per pound, up 21% from a year ago.

Butterball President and CEO JayJandrain said that his company, which supplies around one-third of Thanksgiving turkeys, struggled to attract workers earlier this year, leading to processing delays.

Jandrain said labor shortages have lessened and the company was able to secure enough trucks to get its turkeys to grocery stores. 

While turkeys waited, they grew bigger, adding to already skyrocketing costs for corn and soybean feed so while there will be about the same number of whole turkeys as last year, there are fewer smaller birds.

Biden has also accused companies of essentially taking advantage of a situation to boost profits, attacking businesses essentially.
