After announcing it the day before, Kemp released a ‘shelter in place order’ on Thursday which looks similar to many others that have been drafted around the country and he said he made the decision based on recommendations of health officials.
He encouraged residents of the state to only participate in ‘essential travel’. Many businesses have now been forced to shut down. Restaurants are limited to takeout and grocery stores are still open.
My top priority is keeping Georgians safe and healthy. This executive order will help stop the spread of COVID-19 and flatten the curve.

In an interview released that same day with Rolling Stone, failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams criticized Governor Brian Kemp by saying that a lack of state shutdown is an “ongoing concern.” She was pressed, saying that she would order a “stay at home” while recognizing that there are some counties that might need “exceptions.”
It seems that many Democrats are taking this time to boost their political standing and criticize Republicans for a perceived lack of action, despite evidence that there isn’t a country in the world that has been able to contain the virus without rights restricting intervention.
