Greg Abbott Hails ‘Positive Development’ As SCOTUS Rules That Texas Can Begin Arresting and Deporting Illegal Immigrants

In a 6-3 ruling on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that Texas can begin arresting and deporting illegal immigrants.

The three liberal judges wrote dissents to the decision while the majority did not write a detailed opinion on the case, which is typical.

Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott hailed the ruling in a post on X which he called a “positive development.”

Abbott reported, “BREAKING: In a 6-3 decision SCOTUS allows Texas to begin enforcing SB4 that allows the arrest of illegal immigrants.”

“We still have to have hearings in the 5th circuit federal court of appeals. But this is clearly a positive development,” Abbott explained.

In a reply to Abbott’s post, Twitter owner Elon Musk quipped, “Crazy that it wasn’t a unanimous decision, but still good.”

However, it was reported that is unclear where the illegal immigrants will go should they be ordered to leave.

While the law calls for the illegal immigrants to be sent to ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border, even if they are not Mexican citizens, Mexico’s government said following the ruling that it would not “under any circumstances” accept the return of any migrants to its territory from the state of Texas.

In a statement, Mexico’s foreign affairs ministry said, “Mexico rejects any measure that allows state or local authorities to handle immigration control, detain or return nationals or foreigners to Mexican territory.”
