After many companies, politicians, and voters have been capitulating to the narrative that fewer guns and/or less of a particular type of gun will reduce mass shootings, Colt has joined the club and is proverbially shooting themselves in the foot by stopping the sale of their AR-15 to civilians, ‘for now’.
The CEO, Dennis Veilleux claims this is not a permanent production end but says that he thinks there is already “an adequate supply of sporting rifles” on the market. Although not outright admitting it, this certainly appears to be caving to pressure in the wake of debate among many political and media pundits, especially Democratic presidential candidates such as Beto O’Rourke. It’s ironic that many like Beto though, fail to realize there are legal guns out there that are even more dangerous than the AR-15. They go after this gun and the AK-47 because they are an easy target due to their popularity.
If the left and squishy right in the political realm do manage to push through some sort of ugly gun buyback (confiscation) program for these guns at any point, it will likely set a precedent that if they are not suitable for civilian use, then neither will other even more powerful guns that are also legal be considered suitable.
The Washington Times reports:
Veilleux said in the statement the company remains committed to the Second Amendment and is adapting to consumer demand.
A national gun control debate has focused on access to AR-15s and other assault-style rifles because of their use in mass shootings.
