California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom brushed off criticism over a maskless photograph with Magic Johnson at the NFL’s NFC Championship football game yesterday.
When pressed on the issue, Newsom responded, “I was trying to be gracious and I made a mis… ya know.”
“I was trying to be gracious and took the mask off for a brief second. But no, I encourage people to continue to wear them,” Newsom explained.

The picture of Newsom with Johnson was shared by the former NBA basketball superstar on his Instagram page.
One respondent asked, “Wait where’s this guys mask? Where’s the state of emergency?”
Another called him, “Gavin ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ Newsom.”
National Review noted that SoFi Stadium, where the game was held, requires guests to wear masks except while eating and drinking.
In addition, California currently has a mask mandate for all indoor public spaces until at least February 15.
In a tweet, Johnson shared the picture with Newsom as well as ones that included Democrat Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and Democrat San Francisco Mayor London Breed maskless as well.
