While Nancy Pelosi (CA) was re-elected Speaker of the House by the Democratic caucus for the next session of Congress last month, a floor vote will take place on January 3rd, 2021 with the new members for who will be the speaker.
Democrats have a thinner majority than in 2019 so it will require a near-perfect showing from rank-and-file Democrats for her to again lock down the speakership.
Although some have pointed to the Coronavirus as possibly playing a role, it appears that two incoming freshmen to the elected body migh also have an impact.
Cori Bush (MO) and Jamaal Bowman (NY) appeared this morning on CNN’s “State of the Union” and declined to say whether they will vote in support of Pelosi as Speaker of the House.
Bush chuckled when asked whether she would vote or not for Pelosi and said, “What I’m going to do is make sure that the voices of the people of St. Louis are being heard and that we have what we need. So you’ll find out then.”
“I’m working with my community,” Bush insisted.
Bowman was equally as cryptic and said that he was “organzing” with his “community” as well. He also gave a list of demands that included “reparations for the African-American community.”
