After today’s NATO summit, Joe Biden met with the unanimously re-elected European Council President Charles Michel.
POLITICO reported that Michel was unanimously re-elected for a second term at a meeting of EU leaders today.
Embracing Michel with a handshake, Biden “joked” (according to POLITICO), “I came to congratulate the man who just got re-elected without opposition. I’d dream about that someday.”
The admission from Biden is stunning in some ways, even if it was tongue-in-cheek, considering that many on the left have criticized Vladimir Putin, for example, and his re-elections that have garnered large percentages of the vote.
Michel is the former prime minister of Belgium and his next two-and-half-year term will begin on June 1 and run until the end of November 2024, according to a statement from the European Council.
Michel’s main role as president of the European Council is to chair summits of the EU’s national leaders and coordinate the body’s work.
Widely expected to secure another term by EU officials and diplomats, Michel is considered close to French President Emmanuel Macron and his re-election took place shortly before Biden joined the EU leaders for their Brussels meeting, following a NATO summit also held in the Belgian capital.
