Liberals Triggered After Derek Chauvin’s Attorney Asks for Probation With Time Served

Former police officer Derek Chauvin’s attorney, Eric Nelson, filed a brief filed Wednesday asking for a downward departure from sentencing guidelines or a sentence of probation with time served after he was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of George Floyd.

Nelson wrote, “Mr. Chauvin asks the Court to look beyond its findings, to his background, his lack of criminal history, his amenability to probation, to the unusual facts of this case, and to his being a product of a ‘broken’ system.”

In the sentencing brief, Nelson argued that, among other things, Chauvin obeyed all court orders after he posted bond and was released from jail before trial.

Additionally, Nelson claimed that, like many ex-law enforcement officers, Chauvin “has been preliminarily diagnosed with heart damage” and that he might die at a younger age.

Nelson added that “Independent of the long-term damage a prison sentence would inflict upon Mr. Chauvin’s life prospects, given his age, convictions for officer-involved offenses significantly increase the likelihood of him becoming a target in prison.”

Legal experts have said Chauvin is unlikely to get more than 30 years, which is what the prosecution recommended in a separate brief filed on Wednesday as well.

Liberals on Twitter sounded off on the request by Chauvin’s lawyer as they seek what they believe to be justice in the sentencing.

Twitter user “The Volatile Mermaid” accused Chauvin of “white privilege” and “male entitlement” for “complaining that a long prison sentence will hurt his ‘life prospects.'”

Left-wing political blog Palmer Report suggested that instead of being set free, Chauvin could “go to hell.”

Legal analyst with NBC and MSNBC Glenn Kirschner sounded off in a tweet where he said, “This is literally adding insult to injury. Murdering a citizen your were sworn to protect deserves ZERO time in prison?! This request from Chauvin’s lawyer is an obscene insult to the sanctity of life. Devaluing the life of a fellow human being like this is no kind of lawyering.”
