Liberal tech guru Bill Gates told the BBC in an interview, “It’s actually quite expensive to go to Mars.”
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as well as Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos both have their eyes on the skies. Musk has openly shared that he wants to make it to Mars and colonize there.
Gates seems to think it is wasteful and would rather put money into vaccines. “You can buy measles vaccines and save lives for $1,000 (£814) per life saved,” he told the BBC.
Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 and shared his ultimate goal is to colonize Mars.
Gates has disagreed with Musk and even held a short position on Tesla, all the while pressuring Musk to his ideals. Musk turned down helping him in a philanthropic project after confronting Gates about his short position previously.
Gates believes that Musk will be a “great philanthropist” “someday.” However, Gates seems to think that Musk’s Mars goal is selfish he shared, “other than going to Mars a few times, which might cost a little bit,” he doesn’t believe that Musk spends much of his money on himself. Many think that Gates is jealous beyond the political differences he has with Musk in our speculation.
He added that going to Mars in his view isn’t a good use of money adding “It’s actually quite expensive to go to Mars.”
Gates appears to be politely slighting Musk for his goal to reach Mars, instead of supporting his causes here on Earth.
