According to police, an 18-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after being identified as one of the perpetrators responsible for the murder of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams who was sitting in a car with her father in a McDonald’s drive thru in Chicago.
Jaslyn’s father, Jontae Adams, was reportedly the intended target and survived being shot in the abdomen in what police have called a gang-related shooting that occurred last Sunday.
Marion Lewis faces the murder charge, along with 17 other felony charges, including one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and six counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Lewis led officers on a pursuit on Thursday afternoon after being identified as one of perpetrators responsible for Jaslyn’s murder after officers attempted to stop Lewis, who was inside of a vehicle before the vehicle crashed and Lewis fled from the scene.
After fleeing from the scene, Lewis attempted to carjack a vehicle with a family inside nearby before a Chicago police officer shot Lewis, who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody following treatment.
The investigation continues and Chicago police Supt. David Brown said in a press conference yesterday afternoon that there are more offenders responsible for Jaslyn’s murder.
Brown stopped short of saying it was Lewis that pulled the trigger but said, “At this point, he was involved in the murder of Jaslyn Adams. That’s our specific statement and that’s the way you should word it.”
Lawanda McMullen, Jaslyn’s grandmother responded to the news of the arrest and said, “We’re ecstatic, we’re overwhelmed, happy with some relief, but not a lot because they don’t have all the suspects in custody.”
According to community activist Andrew Holmes. who held a press conference shortly after the shooting, Jaslyn was shot six times.
“If you have any kids, have you ever taken your kids to McDonald’s to eat? You pumped six bullets into that baby. It don’t make you a man or a gangster. Something is wrong with you,” Holmes explained and he urged anyone with information to contact the authorities.
Trump supporter Michael Burkes tweeted out a picture of Jaslyn after the murder and said, “Jaslyn Adams, 7, was fatally shot in the drive-thru of a McDonald’s in Chicago. Rest In Peace. Her life mattered.”
