His announcement though is that he is retiring, and although he is isn’t ruling out a comeback, his new venture is to become a CBD advocate. He also says he needs time away from football and that he wasn’t in a good place in life.
CBS Sports reports:
This event was teased as Gronkowski announcing a big decision about his future, so there were naturally some who held a glimmer of hope that the tight end would announce his return to the New England Patriots. When asked about his decision to retire, Gronkowski began to choke up and revealed that he wasn’t in a good place mentally or physically.

NFL affiliate Ian Rapoport tweeted about an NYC press conference for ‘CBD Medic’ that Gronkowski spoke at today:
“At a @cbdmedic_pharma press conference in NYC, ex-#Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski comes out as a CBD advocate: “I’m here to appeal to the sports governing bodies to update their positions on CBD (so it can be) used by all players. … For the first time in a decade, I’m pain-free.”
Shortly thereafter he posted another tweet:
“Former #Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski insists “I didn’t retire from life.” When asked if he could come back, he says “not in the foreseeable future,” but he says he needs that fire “week-in and week-out.” If he feels good enough — and he’s not there yet — he didn’t rule it out.”

All this comes as the NFL season is gearing up, and a few other shakeups are happening, including Andrew Luck’s retirement from the Indianapolis Colts, and some calls from fans for them to hire Colin Kaepernick, which has caused much controversy among those who are still unhappy with Kaepernick and the NFL because of the National Anthem kneeling incident in 2016. Some fans who quit watching the NFL then have yet to return.
