This morning during the Q&A session of the House press conference as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) put it it was about the I’s Iran and Impeachment, she was asked about the House debate today on the War Powers Act.
Her response went from talking about the briefing she was in and then she jumped to discussion with veterans she had spoken with from the battle of the bulge, and how many of them carry with them the lives they took during the war. In the last part of her response to the question, she says “We all would die for our country we take pride in saying that, but to kill for our country is a pretty traumatic thing. So when we want to engage in these uh whatever you want to call this that the president engaged in we have to be really careful about how we endanger our men and women in uniform who courageously patriotically put themselves out there to protect and defend ” See the clip below:
She may have misconstrued what she meant, however, it made it sound like it would be better to die for your country than to kill for your country in a wartime situation. While peace is always the goal and killing someone in war is definitely can cause trauma, many veterans and troops may disagree with this assessment.
The debate on the floor of the house today is about the War Powers Act which gives the President the power to take action without the authorization of Congress. Nancy and the democrats are looking at limiting the President’s power regarding this. The house is also set to hold a vote after the debate.
