In a major win for former President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court on Friday declined a request from Special Counsel Jack Smith to fast-track his criminal case centered on presidential immunity.
The decision, which came days before oral arguments on Trump’s presidential immunity claims set for January 9th in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, was met with elation by the former president and his supporters.
Posting to Truth Social, Trump characterized the Supreme Court’s decision as a “unanimous rejection of Deranged Jack Smith’s desperate attempt to short circuit our Great Constitution.” He further derided the case as a “sham case” and a “Witch Hunt” orchestrated by his political adversaries. Trump reiterated his claim of presidential immunity, stating, “Of course I am entitled to Presidential Immunity. I was President, it was my right and duty to investigate, and speak on, the rigged and stolen 2020 Presidential Election.”
Some commentators linked the decision to concerns about setting a precedent for future special counsel investigations, while others saw it as a sign of growing skepticism within the highest court toward the merits of the case against Trump.
With the Supreme Court hurdle cleared, Trump’s legal team now prepares to argue for his immunity before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. This court could potentially rule in favor of Trump’s claim, effectively dismissing the criminal case before it proceeds further. This upcoming hearing, viewed by many as a pivotal moment in the legal battle surrounding Trump’s alleged election interference, is expected to draw intense scrutiny from both sides of the political aisle.
While the Supreme Court’s decision was met with jubilation by Trump and his supporters, it remains to be seen whether it will ultimately shield the former president from facing trial. The legal wrangling continues, with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals holding the key to the immediate future of this high-stakes political and legal drama.
Trump Truthed:
“The Supreme Court has unanimously rejected Deranged Jack Smith’s desperate attempt to short circuit our Great Constitution. Crooked Joe Biden and his henchmen waited three years to bring this sham case, and now they have tried and failed to rush this Witch Hunt through the courts. Of course I am entitled to Presidential Immunity. I was President, it was my right and duty to investigate, and speak on, the rigged and stolen 2020 Presidential Election. Looking forward to the very important arguments on Presidential Immunity in front of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. Make America Great Again!”
