Progressive Rep Claims That ‘Student Debt Cancellation is Racial Justice’ Because ‘Black Women Hold the Highest Average Total of Student Debt’

Progressive House Rep Pramila Jayapal (D-WI) made a plea today in regards to student debt cancellation, which Joe Biden has been considering more possible forgiveness.

In a tweet, Jayapal declared, “Black women hold the highest average total of student debt for both undergraduate and graduate school degrees.”

“Let’s be clear: student debt cancellation is racial justice,” Jayapal claimed.

A June 2021 report showed that black women owe 22% more in student debt than white women, on average.

Biden is mulling over forgiving a minimum of $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower via execution action, according to recent reports.

A sweeping debt-forgiveness effort by Biden would represent a massive turnaround from the decidedly cautious approach he has taken on the issue since entering the White House last year, Business Insider noted.

Business Insider also acknowledged that it would also present a economic and ideological dilemma for the administration, as deficit hawks sense that broad cancellation may worsen inflation issues while many liberal allies might feel that the president’s efforts don’t go far enough.

Jayapal, however, doesn’t appear to be concerned about inflation issues, as she tries to appeal to the social justice aspect of the forgiveness.

Last Tuesday, Biden said at the White House, “I am considering dealing with some (student) debt reduction. I am not considering $50,000 debt reduction but I’m in the process of taking a hard look at whether there will be additional debt forgiveness. I’ll have an answer for that in the next couple of weeks.”
