The White House announced today that Joe Biden had a cancerous lesion removed from his chest during his February physical.
The announcement comes after the White House doctor, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said that Biden remains “healthy” and “vigorous” during his initial summary of the physical.
Dr. O’Connor said that the tissue that was removed was sent for a traditional biopsy which confirmed the presence of cancer.
The skin lesion was basal cell carcinoma, which is a common form of skin cancer, according to Dr. O’Connor.
As the Associated Press pointed out, basal cells are among the most common and easily treated forms of cancer, especially when caught early.
The initial exam reported that a “small lesion” was removed from Biden and sent in for the traditional biopsy with results pending.
It was also noted at the time that it was “well-established” that Biden spent “a good deal of time in the sun in his youth.”
“He has had several localized, non-melanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery before he started his presidency,” the report added.
