Peter Navarro has become the second person and first former Trump aide to be indicted by a grand jury for defying subpoenas from the House Jan. 6 Select Committee.
Navarro was indicted on two misdemeanor counts stemming from his failure to comply with demands for documents and testimony in the panel’s investigation.
The indictment of Navarro was issued yesterday and unsealed today. According to NBC News, court documents indicate that the government requested that Navarro’s indictment be sealed until his “arrest operation is executed.”
Navarro “is in custody pending the court appearance” according to what the U.S. Attorney’s Office told NBC News.
U.S. House Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) responded to the news by declaring in a tweet that “this is a total abuse of our justice system.”
“The January 6 committee is illegitimate,” Gaetz insisted.
Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro was just indicted by a federal grand jury on “criminal contempt of Congress.”

Left-wing activist Amy Siskind, however, celebrated the news as she tweeted, “FINALLY!”
FINALLY! Grand jury indicts former Trump adviser Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress, for refusing to cooperate with the House Jan. 6 committee investigation.

Federal prosecutors wrote in the motion to keep the case sealed until Navarro’s arrest, “The events leading to the charges in the Indictment have been the subject of public scrutiny and concern.”
They claimed that public disclosure of the indictment “would give the Defendant the opportunity to flee, tamper with witnesses or evidence, or take other steps to interfere with the criminal case.”
