Trump Acquitted in Senate Trial After a Vote of 57-43 Against Him, Which Didn’t Meet the Necessary 2/3rds Majority

Former President Trump has been acquitted in the Senate trial after the House of Representatives charged him with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol.

The result was expected but Democrats did everything they could to try to get him convicted. The vote was 57-43, in favor, but required a 2/3rds majority.

In the closing arguments, Trump’s lawyer Michael Van Der Veen insisted that “It is a hypocrisy. It is a hypocrisy that the House mangers have laid at the feet of this chamber.”

In his final arguments, Van Der Veen also argued that “It is time to bring this unconstitutional political theater to an end…It is time to address the real business pressing this nation…”

One shock to many was a vote to convict from U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). CNN’s Jake Tapper said, “Burr voted guilty. Wow.”
