Trump-endorsed candidate Mike Carey destroyed the field tonight in an Ohio U.S. House of Representatives primary election, setting him up for a faceoff with Democrat Allison Russo in a special election on Nov. 2.
The race is in the 15th Congressional District, covers 12 counties in central and southern Ohio and includes parts of Columbus and many of its surrounding suburbs, extends to Athens in the east, and reaches Wilmington in the west.
The district has been a solidly Republican seat since 2010 redistricting and is open after Republican Steve Stivers resigned to become CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
Prior to tonight’s primary, Carey had totaled the most money in the crowded race for Ohio’s 15th Congressional District, a feat helped by out-of-state contributions and donors in the coal and mining industries.
Carey’s campaign reported that it had received over $460,000 through mid-July, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
Some had speculated that the former president was losing his grip on the Republican party after Republican Susan Wright lost in a runoff election last week.
Newsweek went so far as to call it “A failing test for Trump.” They claimed that it called “into question how much pull his name has since leaving the White House.”
In an advertisement released in May, Carey called himself an “outsider” and an America First Republican, heaping praise on Trump.
