On Friday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Debra James ruled that there was no “legal foundation” for the decision by former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) to cancel the city’s contract with Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point Park in the Bronx after the events of January 6th.
De Blasio’s administration notified the Trump organization, a little over a week after January 6th, that the city was terminating its contracts with the organization.
De Blasio promised to rid the city of Trump, announcing he was revoking both the contracts for Golf Course in the Bronx, Wollman and Lasker skating rinks, and operating the historic Central Park carousel on January 13th, 2021. “This president has committed an unlawful act, he has disgraced himself, he will no longer profit from his relationship with New York City,” de Blasio told reporters when announcing his actions.
The city argued in court that former President Trump and his companies would not be able to attract “first-class professional championship golf tournaments such as those sponsored by the PGA” to the golf course because it would be associated with “violent insurrection against the federal government.”
The suit brought by the Trump Organization cited there was no contractual breach to justify the revocation of the contract. Justice James ruled in favor of the Trump Organization in an eighteen-page decision. She said there was nothing in the contract that required a tournament, only that the city would share in any proceeds.
This decision by the judge means the Trump Organization can continue to run the golf course.
Eric Trump said after the ruling, “The judge didn’t buy their nonsense and this is a well-reasoned and appropriate decision and we look forward to running the best golf course for years to come.”‘
Eric Trump added, “De Blasio did this for his own political theater. He wasted tremendous amounts of time and city resources on his own vendetta. He is a disgrace to New York and everyone is glad he is gone.”
In a tweet, Eric Trump shared, “Breaking: Total Victory at @TrumpFerryPoint! @BilldeBlasio is a disgrace to New York and his challenge to our contract was nothing more than political theatre (that costs NY tremendous money and time). Our team is proud to continue to operate the greatest Golf Course in New York!”
