The Commission on Presidential Debates announced today that the second presidential debate would take the form of a town meeting, in which the candidates would participate from separate remote locations, i.e. virtual.
They claimed that the move was made in order to protect the health and safety of all involved with the second presidential debate.
President Trump told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo after the announcement that he was “not going to waste” his time doing a virtual debate,” and called it a “joke” and an effort “to protect Biden.”
His son, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted out veiled accusations as well, saying, “Does anyone else find it awfully coincidental that the morning after Mike Pence destroys Kamala Harris in a debate that the ‘debate commission’ unilaterally changes the format to obviously benefit Basement Biden?”

The Debate Commission’s co-chairman Frank Fahrenkopf appeared on Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum tonight and claimed that they had already made the decision yesterday but didn’t want it to overtake the vice presidential debate.
Fahrenkopf is a former chairman of the RNC and said the commission would not host a debate with Biden alone if Trump doesn’t budge.
He said, “No, we wouldn’t have it. You can’t do that under the federal election laws and FEC (Federal Election Commission) rules. You’ve got to balance. You couldn’t have one person going through the debate and the other one not. That wouldn’t be a debate under the law.”
Fahrenkopf said the future of the debate rests with Trump and that “The ball’s in his court. It’s his call. We have to take it the way it comes.”
