Earlier we reported that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) planned to send impeachment articles to the U.S. Senate Monday.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) asked for the impeachment trial to be delayed until February to give Trump more time to prepare his defense.
It has now been reported that opening arguments in the Senate impeachment trial for Donald Trump on the charge of incitement of insurrection for the Capitol riot will begin the week of Feb. 8.
The schedule was announced tonight after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reached an agreement with Republicans.
As we previously reported, under the timeline, the House will transmit the impeachment article against Trump late Monday and then the initial proceedings will start Tuesday.
From there, Trump’s legal team should be able to have time to prepare the case, if necessary, before opening arguments begin in February.
The Gateway Pundit reported earlier that they believe McConnell wanted to postpone the trial to “Keep Trump under his thumb.”
Earlier today, Trump broke his silence and made his first public comments since leaving office, hinting at a comeback but not going into detail. “We’ll do something, but not just yet,” Trump told the Washington Examiner.
It also doesn’t look like there is much of a chance of conviction regardless, as multiple Republican Senators have said that they don’t believe there is, since it would require a two-thirds vote.
