After Washington Commanders Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio expanded on thoughts that he had made in a tweet when asked by a reporter on Wednesday, it seemed inevitable there would be some repercussions.
Del Rio apologized later that day in a tweet for a portion of what he said, where he had referred to Jan. 6 as a “dust-up” at the Capitol, but it still wasn’t sufficient.
In a statement today the Commanders’ Head Coach Ron Rivera announced that Del Rio has been fined $100k for the comments, which will be donated to the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
Additionally, Rivera said in the statement, “I want to make it clear that our organization will not tolerate any equivalency between those who demanded justice in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the actions of those on January 6 who sought to topple our government.”
In a tweet by the Commanders’ Twitter account, which also has the team’s logo with “pride” colors as the profile picture, many responded by disagreeing with the move.
Conservative verified Twitter user John Hawkins replied, “Basically, he’s getting a 100k fine for comparing the rioters on the other side that you don’t like to the rioters on your side that you do like.”
“Sounds like something out of China or the Soviet Union,” Hawkins pointed out.

Twitter user “DC,” who appears to simply be a fan of the team and not necessarily politically aligned, called it “kinda wild” that Del Rio would be fined for “having an opinion.”

Of course, even leftists weren’t pleased with the solution as the NAACP had previously called for Del Rio to resign or be fired.
Leftist Twitter user Michael Clinton replied, “If it’s not tolerated, why is he employed? This isn’t an isolated statement on his part… It’s a pattern of behavior. So if it’s not tolerated…. why is your organization tolerating it?”

So if it's not tolerated…. why is your organization tolerating it?
On Monday, Del Rio had replied to a tweet from CNN “legal analyst” Norm Eisen about the primetime Jan. 6 hearing that was held last night.
“Would love to understand “the whole story “ about why the summer of riots, looting, burning and the destruction of personal property is never discussed but this is ???” Del Rio asked.
