‘Wooderson’ Matthew McConaughey Moves Forward With Potential Bid to Replace Texas Governor Greg Abbott

Actor Matthew McConaughey has previously signaled interest in getting involved in politics, possibly a fun for Texas Governor. Before now it has mostly been flirting with the idea. Apparently, he is taking some next steps now though, making phone calls, weighing his options, and seeing who may support him.

Although most Hollywood actors, almost by default, are liberal Democrats, McConaughey has played both signs to some degree and has actually managed to stay popular and out of the political limelight. He has indicated some support for gun control activism, which would certainly not bode well with Republicans however.

Additionally, it has been reported that although it in unclear which party he would run with, the Democrats have encouraged him to run and welcomed him with open arms. We don’t know if they know something we don’t know beyond his gun control stance, or if they are trying to “meme” him into becoming one of them.

Nevertheless, nobody actually knows just yet what side he would choose, and gun control in Texas probably wouldn’t go over well anyway. The actor who played Wooderson in Dazed and Confused has certainly come full circle to a possible political life. Time will tell how serious is, or if he can win.

Meanwhile, both parties have a lot of people who are not too happy with Texas’ current Governor Greg Abbott right now. Although he has pleased right-wingers on some bills he has signed and supported, he hasn’t been great on confederate monuments, free speech, (he disavowed internet platform “Gab”) and hasn’t been strong enough on the border in the wake of the Biden Border Crisis.

Although Abbot has blamed President Joe Biden for the crisis at the southern U.S. border, which affects Texas to a large degree, he hasn’t done enough to appease many Republicans in the way of using his Governor powers to stop it from happening, at least on the Texas/Mexico border. It’s unlikely that a Matthew McConaughey type would do much more though, but the risk to the GOP from him would be that he may get the larger centrist vote from a red state that has been trending blue due to immigration and demographic shifts.

Despite the Democrats’ claim to be excited about this news, Breitbart reported that the Hollywood actor may be flirting with some GOP donors. They reported in part:

The Oscar-winning star, who previously said a run for Texas governor remained a “true consideration,” has been “quietly making calls to influential people in Texas political circles, including a deep-pocketed moderate Republican and energy CEO,” according to Politico, which added the Lone Star State native is gauging the political climate ahead of formally tossing his hat into the arena.

Stay tuned for more updates on this fluid situation and to find out more about the possible freshman crop of potential Texas Gubernatorial candidates.
