U.S. Sen Mitt Romney (UT) today admitted to texting with his niece and RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel about the recent censures of U.S. House Reps Liz Cheney (WY) and Adam Kinzinger (IL).
As we previously reported, Romney publicly decried the censures in a tweet where he claimed, “Shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol.”
“Honor attaches to Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for seeking truth even when doing so comes at great personal cost,” Romney declared.
In regards to McDaniel, Romney said while speaking at the U.S. Captiol, “We’ve exchanged some texts. … I expressed my point of view.”
Romney would not elaborate further on what the texts contained, although he described McDaniel as “terrific” and added, “I think she’s a wonderful person and doing her very best.”
While Romney wouldn’t say what the messages contained, he did speak further on the resolution and that it “could not have been a more inappropriate message.”
Romney insisted, “One, to sanction two people of character as they did. But number two, to suggest that a violent attack on the seat of democracy is legitimate political discourse is so far from accurate as to shock and make people wonder what we’re thinking.”
McDaniel had attempted to clarify what that part meant by suggesting in a statement that the two GOP lawmakers were involved in persecuting citizens “engaged in legitimate political discourse” but “that had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol.”
Romney also was worried the resolution could hurt Republicans in the 2022 midterm elections and asserted that “Anything that my party does that comes across as being stupid is not going to help us.”
