Invoking former President Donald Trump and his administration’s transparency when it came to allowing the media to tour the southern border DHS facilities, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz called out President Joe Biden’s refusal to allow them to do so “outrageous” in a letter that he sent to Biden today.
Cruz urged Biden “to stop denying reality, confront the consequences” of his policies and “allow the media access to these facilities.”
In the letter, Cruz recounted an incident that happened recently and said, “When I
took pictures to show the American people the conditions at the Donna facility (after blurring all
faces to protect the privacy of the individuals held there), a political appointee sent by your
administration jumped in front of my camera to try to stop me from doing my job.”
“She threatened another senator that if he did not delete his pictures, the entire delegation would be kicked out and
prevented from conducting our constitutional oversight role,” Cruz added.
Recently, it was reported that the Biden administration is not requiring FBI fingerprint background checks of caregivers at its rapidly expanding network of emergency sites to hold thousands of immigrant teenagers, alarming child welfare experts who say the waiver compromises safety.
Biden’s team is turning to a measure used by previous administrations: tent camps, convention centers and other huge facilities operated by private contractors and funded by U.S. Health and Human Services in the rush to get children out of overcrowded and often unsuitable Border Patrol sites.
A recent Axios report showed that the Biden administration projects the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border could spiral from more than 16,000 this month to as many as 26,000 in September.
After breaking the previous record of 11,475 set in May 2019, the minimum projections for each of the next six months are thousands higher than that.
Under current policies, the government is facing a staggering number of migrant kids illegally crossing the border this fiscal year from, expecting anywhere from 159,000 to 184,000 and even the low-end estimate is double the total number of kids who tried to cross during the crisis year of 2019.
In 2014, the Obama administration struggled to care for just 69,000 kids who crossed illegally, Axios pointed out.
Previously, we reported that Cruz had mocked Biden’s decision to place Vice President Kamala Harris in charge of securing the southern border and since that announcement, her involvement has been downplayed.
