Utah’s Weber County Republican party became the second unit in the state to censure Senator Mitt Romney for his votes to impeach former President Donald Trump.
After getting booed at the GOP state convention in Utah recently and barely surviving a censure vote there, Romney was unable to get past this vote, despite multiple motions made in an effort to stop it from happening.
In the censure resolution, the group stated that the censure was because Romney voted “to convict President Trump in two U.S. Senate impeachment trials which denied the President due process, allowed falsified evidence, did not provide adequate time for an investigation, and did not follow the U.S. Constitution which states a President may only be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors.”
The resolution conversely thanked Romney’s fellow Senator Mike Lee for his votes “to protect due process and the US Constitution by voting against the unconstitutional charges.”
The Standard-Examiner reported on those who spoke regarding the censure:
Impassioned delegates spoke on both sides of the issue. Among them was Doug Anderson, who handed out a letter to everyone as they walked through the doors of HighMark Charter School, where the convention was held, pleading with other delegates to “act rationally rather than just emotionally.”
“I’m concerned that if we do what (the resolution) says, then it’s going to feed fuel to the fire of discord,” Anderson said, addressing the party.
“I’m not here to divide the party by censuring Mitt Romney,” said Brian Gray, one of the sponsors of the resolution, firing back at Republicans who said throughout the day that a censure would be polarizing. “I’m here to make him aware of how he divided the party.”
Previously, we reported:
Trump released a statement yesterday addressing Senator Mitt Romney being booed and heckled at the Utah GOP convention this weekend, calling Romney a stone cold loser. Trump’s Statement reads:
“So nice to se RINO Mitt Romney booed off the stage at the Utah Republican State Convention. They are among the earliest to have figured this guy out, a stone cold loser”
His censure was brought forth at the convention as well however it failed with a vote of 798 to 711. The censure was brought forth because Romney voted to remove Trump from office according to Utah Republican Party spokeswoman Lynda Cox.
