Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas appeared today at a Virginia legislative special session and told reporters that she “will be vindicated” of felony charges that were issued against her in regards to the destruction of a confederate statue in Portsmouth.
Her appearance was delayed, in part apparently because she turned herself in to police and is now out on bond. Her attorney Don Scott called the charges a desperate act of politics.
“Consequently they’re doing what they always do which is they weaponize the criminal justice system against black leadership and that’s what they’re doing this time we’re gonna fight it vehemently, we’re gonna fight it vigorously,” he said.
On Twitter, Lucas thanked Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax for defending her today.
Thank you @FairfaxJustin for speaking your truth! I will see you in the committee when I present my bill on patterns and practices of local police departments.

Fairfax himself was the subject of two sexual assault allegations last year, which perhaps prevented him from taking over when Governor Ralph Northam was found to have racist yearbook pictures.
