Massie and 6 Other GOP Reps. Issue Joint Statement Pushing Back on Attempt to ‘Overturn the Results of the Election’

On Wednesday we reported that GOP Congressman Thomas Massie (KY) said that he “Will vote to reject a state’s electors if a majority of that state’s legislature formally indicates that we should reject that state’s electors.”

Today, Massie was part of a joint group of seven GOP House Reps. who issued a statement pushing back on what Massie called an “attempt to overturn the results of the election.”

Massie tweeted out the statement and said, “Our job on January 6th is to determine whether these are the electors the states sent us, not whether these are the electors the states should have sent us.”

The statement contends that “If we perpetuate the notion that Congress may disregard certified electoral votes—based solely on its own assessment that one or more states mishandled the presidential election—we will be delegitimizing the very system that led Donald Trump to victory in 2016, and that could provide the only path to victory in 2024.”

Echoing Massie’s words from last Wednesday, the statement continues, “There is one and only one path to victory for President Trump on January 6, 2021, and it depends on state legislatures certifying Trump electors in the states at issue, pursuant to state law and the U.S. Constitution, and based on a finding that votes lawfully cast in November were sufficient to produce a Trump victory.”

Massie tweeted out as well, “When many Republicans joined Democrats this past spring to insist it was too dangerous for Congress to vote in person, they sealed the deal for nationwide mail-in elections in November, which ironically might have cost Republicans the House & Trump the election. I tried.”

In March of last year, President Trump was furious at Massie for threatening to delay the vote on a relief bill and force a roll call vote.

Trump tweeted at the time, “Looks like a third rate grandstander Massie, a Congressman from, unfortunately, a truly GREAT State, Kentucky, wants to vote against the new Save Our Workers Bill in Congress. He just wants the publicity. He can’t stop it, only delay, which is both dangerous & costly. Workers & small businesses need money now in order to survive. Virus wasn’t their fault. It is “HELL” dealing with the Dems, had to give up some stupid things in order to get the “big picture” done. 90% GREAT! WIN BACK HOUSE, but throw Massie out of Republican Party!”
