According to reports, including CNN, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy from his apparent suicide on August 10th shows he had broken bones in his neck. This comes in the wake of much speculation of how exactly he was able to kill himself after being on suicide watch previously, then taken off suicide watch.
There were also discrepancies with the prison guards at the time. According to The New York Times, the New York prison he was in (Metropolitan Correctional Center) was short-staffed, the guard was a substitute, and he may have been left alone for hours.
CNN reports that one of the broken bones in his neck was the hyoid bone, which can break when a person hangs themselves or is strangled.
People familiar with the autopsy report told the newspaper the bones broken in Epstein’s neck included the hyoid bone, which is near the Adam’s apple.
This sort of break can happen when a person hangs themselves or dies by strangulation, forensics experts told the Post.
All these details and more lead people to believe there may be more questions to ask about what really happened. Attorney General William Barr has criticized the prison’s ‘serious irregularities’ and says DOJ officials will thoroughly investigate.
“We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation,” Barr said during remarks at a law enforcement conference in New Orleans. “The FBI and the Office of Inspector General are doing just that.”
Barr said he was “appalled” and “angry” by the developments; he insisted that the Justice Department would “get to the bottom” of what happened and promised accountability.
“Let me assure you this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein,” Barr said. “Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice and they will get it.”
