A man caught in a traffic stop in Oconee County in Georgia (which is included in the Athens metropolitan area) was found to be a suspect in a 1994 murder that took place in Atlanta, GA.
The man had a South Carolina license under a different name and that license was suspended, which caused police officers to take him into custody.
Muhammed Bilal El-Amin is wanted for shooting a man in the face and killing him at the Oakland MARTA train station just before 1 p.m. on Nov. 27, 1994.
El-Amin identified himself as Rais Sekhem during the traffic stop and after taking him into custody for driving on a suspended license, no insurance, and suspended registration, a fingerprint check matched up with El-Amin.
During the traffic stop, El-Amin pleaded with the deputies simply to give him citations for the offenses and let him go, but they told him the law required them to take him into custody.
El-Amin insisted, “I beg you, I beg of you all. I have children, I have a sick uncle and I run the household…. I’m not a criminal, I’m not a crook.”
The uncle of the man that El-Amin stands accused of killing said, “I think that today was his worst day ever.”
“It is the greatest day for me and my family.” he added.
FBI Atlanta celebrated the arrest in a post where they declared, “#Breaking: After 28 years on the run, murder suspect Muhammed Bilal El-Amin has been captured! He was arrested earlier this week on a routine traffic stop by @oconeesheriff . @Atlanta_Policehttp://ow.ly/SLlv50Ko25V.”
