26-year-old Stephan Cannon was sentenced today by a St. Louis judge to life in prison after being convicted of retired police officer David Dorn’s murder in July.
Cannon was convicted in July of first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, and three counts of armed criminal action in the former St. Louis police Captain’s death.
As STLToday reported, the 77-year-old Dorn was killed June 2, 2020, as he stood outside of a local pawnshop.
Dorn was at the pawnshop to stop looters that had descended on the business during the Black Lives Matter riots that occurred following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
According to prosecutors, Cannon walked out of the store, crouched on a street corner, and fired 10 shots at Dorn, killing him as he approached the shop.
Dorn’s daughter, Lisa Dorn told the court prior to sentencing, “He was murdered by the same type of gentleman my father tried to set an example for his entire life.”
“Our father was a good cop, but more importantly, he was a good man,” Lisa Dorn explained.
Cannon maintained his innocence and denied being the shooter as he said, “To the family, I am sorry for their loss.”
In 2007, Dorn retired from St. Louis police after 38 years, where he then became police chief in Moline Acres, a position which he held for six years.
