WNBA player Brittney Griner was given the “Arizonan of the Year” award by the Arizona Republic newspaper for her contributions in 2022.
The newspaper once gave the award to former NFL player Pat Tillman, who was killed in Afghanistan after he joined the Army following 9/11.
Griner’s WNBA team, the Pheonix Mercury, shared a picture of the front page, which claimed that Griner “captured the public’s eye more intensely than anyone else in 2022.”
Recent winners of the award include “Election defenders,” who won the award last year: “Six Republican elected leaders risked political destruction to stand for true election integrity.”
The year before, the award was given to “Arizona’s health care workers” who were given the award “For their professionalism, their commitment to their fellow human beings and for their endurance in a pandemic whose end was not in sight.”
Kyrsten Sinema, John McCain, and Jeff Flake won the award as well in the last five years, which was shown in a tweet by one Twitter user who responded to the tweet by the Mercury.

Media Research Center noted that the Republic’s editorial board said in the piece giving Griner the award that “Many have argued that Griner had no one to blame but herself for her predicament – that she broke Russian law and now would pay the consequences. Those people fail to understand the essential nature of Vladimir Putin and the Russian justice system.”
“Some conservatives remembered that Griner had called on her own Phoenix Mercury team in 2020 to stop playing the national anthem. We would remind those critics that she did that during a cultural awakening in which African Americans were drawing attention not only to the modern mistreatment of their people but the atrocities committed over centuries against them,” the board added.

While I am very happy that Brittney Griner was able to be brought back home to her family,. It boggles my mind that;
THE STATE OF ARIZONA OR PERHAPS A SINGLE DEED DONE BY THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC NEWSPAPERMK HAS NAMED HER PERSON OF THE YEAR, AND IN MY OPINION, JUST SPIT ON THE GRAVE OF A HERO FROM THE SAME STATE!
Griner denounced this country when she went into protest mode and asked her team to STOP PLAYING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT THEIR GAMES.
She then went to Russia to continue playing during the off-season and to make even more money.
Meanwhile, way back in 2004, Pat Tillman who was from Arizona and playing in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals, turned down a raise to become a US ARMY RANGER. He was deployed
to Afghanistan where after multiple tours was KILLED In action by Friendly Fire.
He also won the person of the year award for the state of Arizona.
IN MY OPINION , This is a disgrace to Him and our Country.
A pro athlete turns down extra money and leaves his team to fight for his country and is Killed while doing it.
18 yrs later another pro Athlete, leaves her country after she denounces it, to make more money. Commits a crime in another country but is saved by the same country she denounced.
Yet the Arizona Republic News somehow sees these two people as equally deserving of this award.
IN MY OPINION, THE STATE OF ARIZONA SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF ITSELF, AND GRINER SHOULD SEARCH HER SOUL AND RESPECTFULLY DECLINE THIS AWARD.

ps,Again let me say, I’m not sure if this award has anything to do with the STATE OF ARIZONA. It may be an award given by the newspaper. It is unclear to me WHO EXACTLY NAMED HER ARIZONIAN OF THE YEAR.
Regardless, THE STATE ITSELF SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR EITHER DOING IT OR ALLOWING IT…… #inmyopinion
