Outgoing Intelligence committee chair, U.S. House Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) sat down with Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week”. The topic of conversation surrounded the Biden document scandal.
With all of the revelations of documents being found all over Joe Biden’s home and private office, Schiff has finally had to admit he cannot “exclude the possibility” that national security was jeopardized by Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Schiff was asked if he felt the same as he did about the appointment of a special counsel being appointed into looking into Biden’s mishandling of classified documents as he did with Trump and the Mar-a-Lago raid.
“I do think its the right move,” Schiff started. “The attorney general has to make sure that not only is justice evenly applied, but the appearances of justice are also satisfactory to the public, and here, I don’t think he had any choice but to appoint a special counsel.”
Schiff shared he has confidence in the special counsel to do a “proper assessment”. Schiff then states that he wants Congress to do their own assessment of what possible exposures there were to the classified documents, in both the Biden and Trump incidents.
Schiff also interjected a “thanks” to President Biden for issuing an emergency declaration for Califonia while it is facing a barrage of wet weather causing much flooding thought out the state.
Karl then directs the conversation back to the documents and asked Schiff, “Is it possible that national security was jeopardized?”
“I don’t think we can exclude the possibility without knowing more of the facts. I’d like to know what these documents were, I’d like to know what the [special counsel’s] assessment is,” Schiff said. A much more measured take than he has given to the Mar-a-Lago raid.
Schiff also drew a contrast he sees between the Biden documents and those recovered in the raid at former President Donald Trump’s home in Florida. “The Biden approach was very different in the sense that it looks that it was inadvertent that these documents were at these locations. There was no effort to hold onto them, no effort to conceal them, no effort to obstruct the Justice Department’s investigation.”
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Robert Hur, a former U.S. attorney as special counsel to investigate the Biden documents. Documents were first discovered while attorneys were cleaning out a private office Joe Biden held after leaving the vice presidency on November 2nd.
The attorney’s notified the proper authorities and the documents were recovered the next day. Other documents were found at Biden’s home in different locations. All of this information was withheld from the public until last week.
The White House has directed all questions about the documents to the White House Counsel.
Biden is under extra scrutiny for comments he made after the raid on Trump’s home in Florida. “How could anyone be that irresponsible?” Biden said at the time.
With this revelation, Democrats are scrambling to appear to take this seriously but making sure to draw a contrast between Biden and Trump, and making sure to avoid saying anything about Biden’s hypocritical statement.
