Anti-Trump pop star Shakira finds herself in a world of trouble and facing a possible 8-year prison term in Spain if she is convicted of tax fraud.
It has been reported that prosecutors are requesting Shakira be sentenced to eight years and two months in prison, and pay a fine of 24 million euros ($24 million).
Shakira reportedly rejected a settlement agreement, choosing to go to trial instead and a date has yet to be set.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, representatives for Shakira said insisted that she “has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer, and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and globally recognized tax firm.”
“Unfortunately, the Spanish Tax Office, which loses one out of every two lawsuits with its taxpayers, continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another baseless case,” the representatives claimed in the statement.
The statement concluded by declaring that “Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process.”
In an August 2020 tweet, Shakira shared a message from Michelle Obama where the former first lady campaigned against then-President Donald Trump.
Shakira said at the time, “Donald Trump has shown that he is not the right person to lead the United States.”
“Kindness and empathy must win this time – and it’s up to people of all ages to do their part: register to vote, wear a mask to the polling station or get a mail-in ballot, and be an example of that kindness and empathy that we want to see in office.”
“Being president doesn’t change who you are; it reveals who you are.”
