In a stunning decision, Former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett was given a reprieve today as an appeals court ruled 2-1 that he could be released from jail bond pending the appeal of his conviction for his 2019 hate crime hoax.
Smollett can now be released after posting a personal recognizance bond of $150,000, meaning he doesn’t have to put down money but agrees to come to court as required, although it is unclear how soon he may be released.
Smollett’s time in confinement has been filled with drama and just yesterday, it was reported that he had been moved to a new jail cell.
Smollett’s brother said he’s been housed in the jail’s psych ward and is still in the same unit but was moved to a different cell on Monday when medical professionals determined another detainee needed it more.
The court order comes less than a week after Smollett was sentenced to a 150-day active jail sentence in the Cook County jail.
Cook County Judge James Linn excoriated Smollett during the sentencing and said that he believed the actor did it for attention mainly and to draw attention to social justice.
We had reported how after the sentencing, Smollett announced with his mask pulled down, “I am not suicidal.”
Facing one of his lawyers Smollett got louder and declared, “I am NOT Suicidal! I am INNOCENT! and I am not suicidal.”
