With many people speculating that we are heading into a recession, companies are looking to “cut the fat”, and Facebook owner ”Meta” is no exception.
The company has cut plans to hire engineers by at least 30%, and on Thursday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had some grave words for employees about the repercussions of an anticipated deep economic downturn.
Reuters reported on the weekly employee Q&A session in which Zuckerberg announced a new strategy for the company.
“If I had to bet, I’d say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history,” Zuckerberg stated. He then announced that Meta would be “turning up the heat” on performance management, setting more rigorous goals to weed out the weak.
“Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg said.
“Part of my hope by raising expectations and having more aggressive goals, and just kind of turning up the heat a little bit, is that I think some of you might decide that this place isn’t for you, and that self-selection is OK with me,” he said.
This messaging from Zuckerberg was followed up with a memo from Chief Product Officer Chris Cox.
“I have to underscore that we are in serious times here and the headwinds are fierce. We need to execute flawlessly in an environment of slower growth, where teams should not expect vast influxes of new engineers and budgets.”
Many companies are scaling back in anticipation of a possible recession. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced recently that those who don’t want to come into work will be let go, and this was followed up by his estimation of cutting back salaried positions by 10%.
The Biden Administration is aware of the troubled economy. They don’t seem to want to much blame or responsibility in our view. Biden doesn’t really want to encourage the oil and gas industry either, as he is pushing a shift to electric cars.
The Biden administration instead, is insistent on pushing forward with their green energy policies as well as continually sending funds to for foreign wars. No one seems to have a solution or a plan for this possible recession, other than acknowledging that it is time to start cutting back.
