The January 6th Committee may have gone too far for the Biden Administration in some of its requests.
A letter was sent out about the requested documents from White House counsel. The letter stated it had come to an agreement with the committee that the documents were not needed and would remain secret stating, the documents “appear to have no content that might be material to the Select Committee’s investigation.”
This is a first as it appeared that the Biden administration was going to give the committee access to whatever they wanted.
The letter reads in part, “President Biden recognizes that Congress has a compelling need, in service of its legislative functions, to understand the circumstances that led to the insurrection. The documents for which the Select Committee has agreed to withdraw or defer its request do not appear to bear on the White House’s preparations for or response to the events of January 6, or on efforts to overturn the election or otherwise obstruct the peaceful transfer of power.”
There are still around 700 documents that the Biden administration has agreed to share with the committee. Trump has filed a lawsuit to block their release under executive privilege and is requesting that the Supreme Court hear his case.
The committee it appears withdrew their request for the documents Biden’s administration said weren’t needed on December 17th. They released a statement, “The Select Committee welcomes President Biden’s decision to clear the way for the production of another set of records. The committee has agreed to defer action on certain records as part of the accommodations process, as was the case with an earlier tranche of records. The Select Committee has not withdrawn its request for these records and will continue to engage with the executive branch to ensure the committee gets access to all the information relevant to our probe.”
It remains to be seen if they will come back to the documents at a later date, but it appears the Biden administration is reluctant to share them.
