The Biden Administration has been quietly urging Mexico to take more illegal immigrants who are expelled from the United States, under Title 42 health policy. This is the same policy from the Trump era that the Biden administration has fought hard and failed to get rid of.
Currently, Mexico accepts migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador when they are turned away from the United States.
According to Reuters, the Biden Administration is now pressuring the Mexican government also accept migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela as the crisis at the border escalates.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has raised concerns over the surge of migrants coming from those three countries during a visit to Mexico on Monday.
Mexico has not made any agreements with the United States on accepting individuals from the three countries. Officials are saying trying to convince them is “an uphill battle”.
While trying to “kill” title 42 publicly, it seems that some in the Biden administration viewed the expulsion order as a way to curb the current crisis according to a U.S. official. Perhaps Democrats are reversing course as Governors Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott put the pedal to the metal on their strategies to hold them accountable.
Mexico has already accepted 299,000 migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Only 9,000 people from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela have been turned over to Mexico.
According to Reuters, the Mexican government is unwilling to accept illegals from the other three countries because Havana, Managua, and Caracus won’t accept deportations from Mexico.
A spokesperson from the White House National Security Council wouldn’t discuss the conversations between U.S. and Mexico, but did say that countries in the region “have already begun to take collective responsibility to manage migration flows, including through repatriations.”
While all of this is happening, the messaging to the public from the White House hasn’t changed, Vice President Kamala Harris, “Border Czar”, told Chuck Todd on Sunday, “The border is secure, but we also have a broken immigration system, in particular, over the last four years before we came in, and it needs to be fixed.”
The statistics from the border tell a very different story. So far this fiscal year, Border Patrol has reported more than 1.94 million encounters at the border, well over the 2021 number of 1.73 million and decimating 2020s 458,000.
