The fugitive Texas Democrats in Washington D.C. are upset after being unable to secure a meeting with President Joe Biden with State Rep Richard Peña Raymond venting to Texas U.S. House Rep Lloyd Doggett during a Zoom meeting yesterday.
Raymond explained, “He won’t meet with us on Zoom like this, and I’m trying to be tactful, but I don’t know how else to say it, man. I’m just pissed off at this point. He doesn’t give us the respect the way you have.”
They have, however, gained meetings with several high-profile party leaders in their quest for federal action on voting rights, including House Majority Whip James Clyburn, Vice President Kamala Harris, and several Democratic senators.
In a subsequent Zoom meeting with Beto O’Rourke, he encouraged them to ramp up pressure on the Biden by telling them, “I feel very strongly about this. I think you need to center and focus all of your effort on the president.
The former Democratic congressman and presidential candidate also announced a $600,000 donation to help pay for the Washington trip.
During the meeting, O’Rourke also told them that Biden needs to be held accountable for the voting bills stalled in Congress, explaining that the president is “not doing what is required.”
O’Rourke said, “I know that there’s a balance for us to strike. We want to continue to encourage him and celebrate the good work that he’s doing and demonstrate our support for him. But we must also hold him accountable. And right now, he is not. He’s not doing what is required, given the threat that we face in Texas.”
In regards to a potential meeting, O’Rourke complained, “The least he could do, in my opinion, is to meet with you and listen to you and hear it directly from you about what your constituents face already and what they’re likely to have to endure going forward if voter suppression legislation is passed in Texas and voting rights legislation is not passed in Washington, D.C..”
When asked if Biden would meet with the Texas delegation, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday that she doesn’t “have any meetings to preview for you at this point in time.”
Conservatives responded to the situation, mocking the Democrats for being given the cold shoulder.
Republicans for Voting Rights director Amanda Carpenter shared the article on the situation and said, “Biden won’t meet with the Texas Dems about voting rights? As someone likes to say, ‘C’mon man!'”

U.S. House Rep Ronny Jackson (R-TX) also shared the article and told the Texas Dems, “NOBODY cares! @TexasDemocrats, if you’re so angry, imagine how your constituents must feel after you ABANDONED them. At this point, most Texans are hoping you never come back! Stay mad and stay gone.”

While it is unclear why Biden won’t meet with them, Harris had to take a COVID test after her meeting so it’s conceivable that he may be upset that they did not take more precautions.
