Biden Vows to Nominate the First Black Woman to the Supreme Court, Claims It Will Be Someone With ‘Extraordinary Qualifications’

Joe Biden today vowed to nominate the first black woman to the Supreme Court and claimed it will be someone with “extraordinary qualifications.”

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer wrote a letter to Biden informing him of his intent to retire from the nation’s highest court.

Breyer said, “I enormously appreciate the privilege of serving as part of the federal judicial system. I have found the work challenging and meaningful.”

“My relations with each of my colleagues have been warm and friendly. Throughout, I have been aware of the great honor of participating as a judge in the effort to maintain our Constitution and the rule of law,” Breyer added.

In the letter, Breyer also wrote that he intends his decision to take effect when the Supreme Court rises for the summer recess, assuming that his successor has been nominated and confirmed by then.

Biden and Breyer held a press conference at the White House to mark the retirement.

In a tweet, Biden confirmed his intentions to select the replacement for Breyer based on race and sex, just like he had done with Kamala Harris as his running mate.

“The person I nominate to replace Justice Breyer will be someone with extraordinary qualifications,” Biden declared.

Biden added, “Character, experience, and integrity. And they will be the first Black woman nominated to the United States Supreme Court.”
