California GOP governor candidate Caitlyn Jenner said today that U.S. House Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went “too far” after she used the phrase “menstruating person” while attacking Texas’ new anti-abortion law.
In a CNN interview with Anderson Cooper, Ocasio-Cortez responded after he asked her about some recent comments by Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott.
Abbott said the law doesn’t force rape victims to bear their rapist’s children after a reporter claimed the state’s new abortion restrictions does just that.
As the Independent reported:
“It doesn’t require that at all, because obviously it provides at least six weeks for a person to be able to get an abortion,” the governor said.
AOC called that defence absurd, noting that at six weeks into a pregnancy, a woman may only be two weeks late for her period, and therefore not know she is pregnant.
“I don’t know if he is familiar with a menstruating person’s body,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez said, referring to Mr Abbott. “In fact, I do know that he’s not familiar with a woman – with a female or menstruating person’s body, because if he did, he would know that you don’t have six weeks.”
After the Daily Mail criticized her response in an article, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a screenshot of their title, which said that she called women “menstruating people,” and attempted to further clarify.
Ocasio-Cortez explained, “Not just women! Trans men & non-binary people can also menstruate. Some women also *don’t* menstruate for many reasons, including surviving cancer that required a hysterectomy. GOP mad at this are protecting the patriarchal idea that women are most valuable as uterus holders.”
“Trans, two-spirit, and non-binary people have always existed and will always exist. People can stay mad about that if they want, or they can grow up,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
Jenner was clearly not convinced by her clarification and quote tweeted her initial tweet while pushing back on her claims.
“As a proud member of the LGBT community and an extremely open minded accepting person, this is too far. The left is hijacking the LGBT community and @AOC isn’t an ally!” Jenner exclaimed.

Daily Caller reporter Mary Margaret Olohan tweeted out a clip of the interview and said, “.@AOC struggling for consistency as she alternatively uses the phrases ‘people who give birth,’ ‘women’ and ‘any menstruating person’ to describe women affected by Texas’ Heartbeat Act.”
